Red SsquirrelThe natural heritage can be found throughout Scotland: from the parks and open spaces in our towns to the remote and wild areas of the Highlands and Islands and to the seas around our shores. It is a nationally and internationally renowned part of Scotland’s national identity. It contributes greatly to our well-being and quality of life.

GMFF is dedicated to the Scotland's Natural Heritage. We visit various nature reserves and work from there on the air representing our national natural heritage to the world-wide amateur radio community. We publish informative reports about our trips on this website. We work together with the World Flora and Fauna (WFF) amateur radio fund.

GM4FFF DX-pedition to Flanders Moss (GMFF-024)

For the first time GM4FFF was working from Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve (GMFF-024) on 29th and 30th May, 2010. Flanders Moss National Nature Reserve (NNR) is one of the largest areas of relatively undisturbed lowland raised bog in the European Community. Because of its natural heritage importance, it has been designated a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Quite simply, it is probably the biggest and best remaining raised bog in Western Europe. It is one of the last remaining natural landscapes in Scotland and is home to many plants, insects and birds. It also tells a fascinating story of the social and cultural history of people living in this part of Scotland. There is much to interest people. Our team consisted of MMØDFV, GMØWRR, and GMØEZP. The most important location references are - WAB Square: NS69; Grid Locator: IO76VD; Latitude: 56°09'12''N; Longitude: 04°10'39''W; IOTA: EU-005; EU Area: SC30 (Stirling). QSL-manager is MMØDFV.

GM4FFF - New Call Sign for Our DX-peditions

GM4FFFDear friends! We would like to share a good news with you. Today we have received a licence for GM4FFF call sign. This is a fantastic combination we could ever dream to have for our team's call sign. We would like to thank Julian Creedy, VK4CMV and Alistair Grieve, G4ATI for their wish and assistance to transfer this remarkable old call sign to our group.

From now GM4FFF and GS4FFF call signs will be used to organize various DX-peditions to the nature reserves of Scotland under the GMFF and WFF award programmes. GM4FFF will be used from Mainland Scotland, and GS4FFF will be used from the Scottish Islands. We will certainly use GM4FFF call sign for our "guest" expeditions abroad or to other countries of the United Kingdom using corresponding country designators, such as GX4FFF, GC4FFF, etc. Please watch this space, our next DX-pedition will be announced shortly. All the very best and 73 from Scotland!

GB8RUM DX-pedition to the Isle of Rùm (GMFF-058)

Isle of RumGMFF team was working as GB8RUM from the Isle of Rum (GMFF-058) from 1st until 3rd May, 2010. We have received an official permission to visit this island from Ms. Sarah Bentley, the SNH Operational Manager of the Rum National Nature Reserve. On 26th March, 2010 we have received an Ofcom Notice of Variation of an amateur radio full licence authorising the use of the GB8RUM special call sign from the island during our DX-pedition.

The Isle of Rum is the largest of the Small Isles, and the fifteenth largest Scottish island, but is inhabited by only about thirty or so people, all of whom live in the village of Kinloch on the east coast. The island has been inhabited since the 8th millennium BC and provides some of the earliest known evidence of human occupation in Scotland. There is a spectacular array of internationally important habitats. A range of heaths from wet and dry to montane cloak the hillsides and mountain tops. Unusual grasslands, influenced by metals in the soil, fens, blanket bogs, lochs and lochans all contribute to this rich open ground habitat mosaic.

Our team consisted of Jurij, MM0DFV and Alan, GM4TOQ. The portable station was located not too far from the village of Kinloch. The most important location references are - OS National Grid Reference: NM397999; WAB Square: NM39; Grid Locator: IO67UA; Latitude: 57°00'59''N; Longitude: 06°17'24''W; IOTA: EU-008 (Inner Hebrides); IOSA: NH02; SCOTIA: DI20; EU Area: SC17 (Highland). We have made 2151 QSOs on CW, SSB, and BPSK63 on all bands from 3.5 MHz to 28 MHz. The QSL-manager is MM0DFV.
